Here's a thing...
According to "Location in space: Theoretical perspectives in economic geography" by the Peters Dicken and Lloyd (1981, I think), in terms of travel time London is about the same distance from Stranraer as it is from Montreal, and Amsterdam is nearer than Penzance.
